OBJECTIVES OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD

Aside from providing prestige, the role of the editorial board is to advise and support the editor. Functions may include:

  • Identifying new topics for commissions, special editions and advising on direction for the journal—giving feedback on past issues and making suggestions for both subject matter and potential authors
  • Approaching potential contributors
  • Peer review; also help to identify peer reviewers and provide second opinions on papers
  • Endorse the journal to authors, readers, and encourage colleagues to submit their best work.

Editorial Staffs

Editors are ultimately accountable for the quality of their journal’s content. Editors are responsible for identifying important topics, sourcing high quality manuscripts, handling day-to-day paperwork, and organizing the flow of manuscripts (i.e. from author to referees and back and finally to the publisher).

The two most important attributes of a good editor are (1) having a detailed knowledge of the subject area and (2) being organized.

  • Journal Manager: responsible for setting up the journal website, configuring system options, and managing user accounts. The Journal Manager also registers editors, section editors, copyeditors, layout editors, proofreaders, authors, and reviewers. Journal Manager also has access to manage journal features and can create new categories for journals, set up review forms, change emails, manage Reading Tools, view statistics and reports, and much more.
  • Editor: in charge of supervising the entire process of reviewing, editing, and publishing the journal. The editor works with the Journal Manager in establishing the journal's publishing policies and procedures. In the editorial process, the editor gives assignments to the section editor to review and edit incoming journal article manuscripts. The editor continues to oversee the development of the review and editorial process including copyediting, layout editing, proofreading, and assisting the section editor if they encounter difficulties. The editor is also in charge of assisting with journal editions, scheduling journal publications, compiling journal tables of contents, and publishing journals as part of the publication process.
  • Section Editor: responsible for managing and being responsible for articles that have been edited by editors and edited by reviewers.
  • Copyeditor: responsible for managing grammar and editing sentences so that they are understood by readers, checking for possible errors, and ensuring that articles are following the style of the journal's environment. The copyeditor also has the role of receiving articles from section editors via email for copying and editing
  • Layout Editor: convert copied and edited articles into PDF for e-publishing
